PS 36 ON THE MOVE!
PS 36 Margaret Douglas School is on the move. This past week was a whirlwind of activity. On May 13, 2015, PS 36 held a school wide Science Fair, followed by Career Day on May 15 then culminating with the STEM District wide event on May 16th, held at the Armory on 142nd Street and Fifth Avenue.
The school wide Science Fair was an enormous hit with submissions from all grades. The displays ranged from decomposition of food to exploding soda. All of the exhibits were excellent as students were able to effectively state their hypotheses, experiment processes and conclusions. Winners for first, second and third place respectively went to Ms. Martinez/Ms. Tome Grade 5 Decomposition of Tomatoes, Ms. Smith class on display of various Landforms , and Ms. Dinkins/Steel Grade 4 Sugar and Its Effects in the Human Body. All exhibits were displayed at the STEM event on Saturday May 16th. We extend congratulations for a job well done to all the students and teachers for their hard work in making both events a marvelous success. Thank you to the parents who supported the students as it was well attended. Special thanks to the science teacher, Mr. Faulkner for his commitment, perseverance and hard work in coordinating and planning.
Career Day was held on May 15th which was a stupendous success. This year’s Career Day highlighted a plethora of career fields. There were 32 speakers which included Supreme Court Judge Shillingford, Yankees Personal Chef Felix Gonzalez, Motivational Speaker Sherman Brown, Product Manager Lindsay Toone from Tommy Hilfiger, many law enforcement officials and a host of other professionals. The event was exceptionally planned by Parent Coordinator Lisa Flores and Guidance Counselor Ms. Alison Mathurin. Student escorts were trained and utilized from all grade levels as they presented the speakers within the classrooms. It was a stellar event and continues to grow each year. We look forward to seeing what next year’s Career Day will bring.
PS 36 E’s of Excellence: Engage, Enrich, Encourage, Empower!
SEPTEMBER 16, 2014
PS 36 first initiative for the school year was a great success! The event was spearheaded by Parent Coordinator Lisa Flores. The Dads Take Your Child to School (DTYCTS) campaign promotes father involvement by encouraging fathers, stepfathers, foster fathers, grandfathers, uncles, brothers, godfathers, and other significant male caregivers to take their children to school or Head Start at the start of the school year and remain. involved throughout the year.
The turnout was great considering the inclement weather. Guest Speaker for the event was former Principal, Ms. Cynthia Mullins-Simmons. She spoke to the fathers about an ongoing collaboration in the education of their children. There will be meetings and workshops for the men throughout the school year. The men were very responsive and enthusiastic. The men were treated to a continental breakfast and were allowed to visit the students' classroom. We look forward to continued growth and collaboration with the fathers moving forward.
